Confounding Parameters.
Potentially confounding variables are listed in table 1. We defined preexisting medical conditions using ICD-9 billing codes and included only those fulfilling at least one of the following: (1) appeared in the patient “problem list” with a date preceding the date of surgery; (2) appeared in an ICD-9 list before the index surgery; or (3) were flagged as a chronic ICD-9 condition based on Healthcare Cost and Utilization Project definitions.
